Shildon Memory Cafe celebrates eighth anniversary

The Memory Cafe based at Rowan Avenue Community Lounge is celebrating over eight years of supporting those living with dementia in Shildon.

Originally founded by The Alzheimer's Society, The AAP and charity groups, The Memory Cafe provides a welcoming space for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. Each month they offer a range of activities including rock and roll bingo, flower arranging and reminiscing quizzes, as well as refreshments and the opportunity to connect with others facing similar challenges.

We joined organiser Adele Todd, who has been running the initiative alongside a dedicated group of volunteers, for their March get together.

Adele Todd, Memory Cafe Organiser, said: "Its been a pleasure hosting the memory cafe with the volunteers. As a former nurse, I find these sessions very beneficial to the 12-15 people who attend monthly. It's a safe space and a lovely social environment. We welcome anyone to pop along"

Julie O'Connor, Community Regeneration Adviser, said; "We are proud to be able to support the group through funding and use of a comfortable lounge space. This initiative is part of a broader offering for our tenants and the residents in the community and includes the option to refer to social prescribers and gain support from Durham Carers."

We offer support to families where a diagnosis of dementia can present challenges, with services such as home support checks, aids and adaptations and support for rehousing. For dementia support outside of County Durham, we also provide contact information for local dementia support agencies in Hartlepool, Darlington, and Stockton. For more information, please visit our Dementia Support page.

If you would like to join the Memory Cafe, they meet every first Tuesday of the month at the Rowan Avenue Community Lounge in Shildon.
