Life changing support for Newton Aycliffe tenant

At the age of 18, Tony Robinson, from Newton Aycliffe decided on a career with The British Army and enlisted for 22 years of service traveling the world.

A biking accident changed his life leaving him paralysed from the chest down and requiring the use of a wheelchair. Throughout his life, Tony has always remained independent, played basketball for Newcastle Eagles, and enjoys regular fishing tournaments.

It wasn't until he moved into his bungalow in August 2019, that he started to find aspects of day-to-day life improve. With the support of our Occupational Therapist Vicky Walker, who also worked alongside Durham County Council, Tony could have life-changing improvements carried out to his home.
These included a fully fitted wet room, external door alterations to allow for easier wheelchair access, especially when returning home with his food shopping, and the repositioning of the heating controls to a wheelchair accessible height

“Being able to live independently is something people may take for granted but the simplest task of moving the thermostat meant stopping the glare from the sunlight blocking my view. The last three years, since moving into my home, have been the most peaceful of my life”

Tony has expressed how unbelievably grateful he is to be able to access our aids and adaptations services and wanted to share his experience so that others can live independently for longer in their own homes.

We can support you to access the most appropriate support for your individual needs.
