A second memory café has opened its doors in Shildon providing people living with dementia and Carers much needed support and respite, thanks to strong community partnership.

The new memory café based at Harrison Close community lounge follows the successful launch of the Chestnut Close memory café last year which has already attracted over 240 visitors.

The partnership behind the café includes Livin, Shildon Health Express, Durham County Council, Pioneering Care Partnership, Shildon Town Council, Shildon Alive and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Brian Stephens, Shildon Health Express said: “There is increasing demand for services to support people living with Alzheimer’s.  We are delighted to be leading the way on such a worthwhile initiative and this is another positive step towards creating a dementia friendly community in Shildon.
“Working with Livin and using the accommodation and facilities they have provided at Harrison Close, and with the help and guidance of the Alzheimer’s Society we can offer real support to those who need it most.”

The café offers free drop in sessions on the third Tuesday of every month between 1.00pm – 2.30pm providing a safe environment for people to socialise, helping reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Visitors will be able to access free support and advice provided by advisors from the Alzheimer’s Society, as well as take part in activities such as singing and dancing led by volunteers.

Free transport is available to anyone who would like to visit the café and can be booked through Elliot Snowball, Health Trainer on 07736295598.
